Daniel Shepard is a Mexican illustrator based in New York City. Combining playful humor with grunge aesthetics, he's collaborated with global brands including Santa Cruz, Nike, & Volcom. His unique style can also be found on the pages of major publications like Thrasher, The New Yorker, and Bon Appétit.
He recently sat down with Public Record to reveal his new series of self-published art books collecting ephemera that others might have thrown away.
PR: How did you get into Art Books?
DS: I’ve always been drawn to rare, out of print, and overlooked printed matter or anything that sparks my curiosity.
PR: Where has that curiosity led you?
DS: Over the years, this has led me to build collections of vintage stickers, patches, and other ephemera.
PR: What's next?
DS: Turning these collections into books has become a way to preserve and share them, while also giving me the opportunity to explore publishing as a creative practice.
Rough Cuts spans more than 57 hand designed grip tape works created over the past decade, this book documents Daisuke Kagoshima’s ongoing collection. Born and raised in Tokyo, Daisuke is a skater, musician, and creator whose work is rooted in punk culture and skateboarding. A member of the band Oledickfoggy for over 25 years, he also runs Golden Age Skate Shop in Tokyo with his family and crew, a community hub built around skating, music, and the culture that shaped him.
Sonideros are mobile sound systems and DJs rooted in Mexico City’s working class neighborhoods. More than parties, they are a community-driven tradition where music, custom graphics, and live shout outs bring people together. Influenced by cumbia, salsa, and tropical rhythms, Sonideros have become a vibrant expression of urban culture, identity, and collective celebration. This project focuses on the business cards found at "Tianguis" aka Flea Markets. Packed with bold typography, vibrant colors, layered imagery, and visual excess, these cards reflect the energy and identity of each Sonidero. This spiral bound book documents the fantastic world of the Sonideros.
