Is punk the new jazz? The line between the two styles gets very blurry in the work of John Yates of Stealworks. He’s the designer behind the “Punk Note” style, which has created alternate covers for Descendents and Bad Brains, recasting their classic three-chord rock in the style of vintage Blue Note Record covers from jazz’s golden age. He’s got a new one out now thanks to TKO Records: Poison Idea’s Pearls Before Swine, The Early Years Vol. 2. Presenting the earliest recordings of the Portland punk band, TKO’s new edition employs a “Pig Note” variant of Yates’ retro jazz concept, but of course, the music goes hard. What classic punk bands would you like to see reimagined in a Punk Note style? Drop a comment and let us know, and STAY WEIRD, WASTOIDS.
