As one half of the duo Flight of the Concords, Bret McKenzie brought New Zealand comedy to the world. But in 2022, he released the Grammy and Academy Award winning songwriter released Songs Without Jokes, his solo debut for Sub Pop which found him swapping out the wisecracks for heart on the sleeve lyrics.
Well, on August 15th, he’s following that album up with an all-new one, Freak Out City. Inspired by musicians like Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, the new album features the single “All I Need,” a love song that dips its toes into the Beatles gone yacht rock waters, driven by a groovy electric piano.
McKenzie and his band and The State Highway Wonders will tour in support of Freak Out City this fall – dates to be announced soon, stay tuned to WASTOIDS for updates.
